Due to the "Day Fire" burning out of control in the Los Padres National Forest, the Tour of Tour Forest course had to be changed at the last minute. Instead, riders did an out-and-back to the Mojave Desert via San Francisquito Canyon, up and over the Tehachapis and through California City to the middle of nowhere - where they made a u-turn and headed back. Riders fought brutally strong headwinds for the first 100 miles - but were thankfully rewarded with equally strong tailwinds blowing them home to Santa Clarita at the end of the day. Kudos to all the riders who stuck it out and finished the 198 mile course with over 10,000' of climbing. Thanks to everyone for enthusiastically embracing the altered course and for keeping good cheer during the very tough day.
Late in the afternoon, a second fire erupted nearby, just east of Santa Clarita in the Angeles National Forest. As suggested by 1st Place Finisher, Graham Pollock, this 2006 route will now always be affectionately known as the Tour of Two Fires.
Congratulations to the following riders who earned their Planet Ultra Grand Slam, and received a very cool, special edition Grand Slam coffee mug, by completing the Tour of Two Fires Double Century: Rick Burneson, Robert Esparza, Chris Hanson, Ron Hanson, Francis Ignacio, Tom Parkes, Marc Patton, Gerd Rosenblatt and Eric Wilson.
These riders, and everyone else who earned their Grand Slam this year, or any of the last three years, are qualified to wear the awesome Planet Ultra Grand Slam Jersey! Congratulations all! Click here to see the 2006 jersey!
